Having left Selby High School at 17 before completing his A levels, Nigel worked in the advertising and telecommunications industries. In 1993, aged 26, Nigel started his own telecommunications business with a £20 a week enterprise allowance grant and a small loan from his parents. Having started the business in a small rented office with no staff, a telephone and a typewriter, Nigel grew the company successfully year on year. The company was sold to a PLC in 2000 and by then employed 40 staff and had a turnover in excess of £4m. Following the acquisition, Nigel became one of the youngest main board directors of a company listed on the main London stock exchange. He subsequently held a number of positions including non-exec roles in the recruitment, property and events industries. In 2006, Nigel headed a management buy in of a Yorkshire based telecommunications business. Nigel Adams was elected as the Member of Parliament for Selby and Ainsty in May 2010. From June 2006 until May 2010 he was the Conservatives’ Parliamentary Candidate for this seat. In June 2010, Nigel was elected to the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select committee. In September 2010, Nigel was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Leader of The House of Lords, The Rt Hon Lord Strathclyde. This is an important role working with the Leader as the Lords play a vital role making laws and keeping an eye on the decisions and actions of Government. Bringing years of knowledge from many walks of life, members of the Lords apply an experienced perspective to examining legislation and public policy.
