August 2016 – Hinkley Point C

August 2016 – Hinkley Point C

Thank you for your recent email about nuclear power and Hinkley Point C.

The UK needs a reliable and secure energy supply and the Government still believes that nuclear energy is an important part of the mix. The Nuclear Industrial Strategy published in 2013 in partnership with industry establishes a long term approach for the sector to stimulate economic growth and create jobs in this country.

The Government will now consider carefully the different parts of the Hinkley Point project and a decision will be made in the early autumn.

I recognise new nuclear energy generation could play a valuable role in security of supply by allowing us to produce energy here in the UK with greater stability and reduce our carbon emissions at the same time.  However, I do not think that the Hinkley Point C project represents good value for money as it currently stands, therefore I am pleased that this review is taking place.  I will be following its progress closely with an eye to seeing that the interests of the taxpayer and energy consumer are much better protected, if the project goes ahead.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
