Nigel's A-Board petition goes to County Hall

Nigel Adams has delivered a petition to NYCC's chairman, as part of his campaign to assist town traders and get the A-Board ban reversed. 1,063 Selby shoppers and visitors signed Nigel's petition

Nigel, who has spearheaded a shopkeepers’ campaign against the controversial A- board ruling, handed the 1,063-name petition to NYCC chairman Coun John Savage on Tuesday.
He also met three of NYCC’s most prominent figures the day before – leader Coun John Weighell, deputy leader Coun John Watson and chief executive John Marsden – to express traders’ anger.

Nigel said: “Traders in Selby and across North Yorkshire have had it hard enough recently with the worst recession since the war. What they need is support from NYCC at this difficult time.

“The meeting on Monday was encouraging, and NYCC leaders now have a better understanding of the pressures traders are under. They will now consult with their officers to see if some form of compromise can be reached.”

Many traders in town, including Millgate-based Tracey’s Barbers, Gowthorpe’s Go Mobile, Lisa’s Florists operating in The Crescent and many others feel the ban is harming their businesses.

Nigel added: “What the petition does is send a clear signal to NYCC officers many Selby traders, residents and visitors feel the enforcement ban is over the top and unnecessary.
After meeting council leaders, it seems they now recognise the way in which the enforcement came about may have appeared heavy-handed.”
