Official job figures show that the number of people looking for work in Selby and Ainsty as of July 2012 stands at 1,633 people, down 74 from May 2012. This figure is also lower than in May 2010 when the Conservative led Government came into power. Nigel Adams MP commented: “I am very pleased with this quarterly fall in unemployment in my area. This is down to businesses in the private sector rising to the challenge and taking on more people and having confidence to invest despite a difficult economic backdrop.” The employment rate in Yorkshire and the Humber for the three months from April to June 2012 rose by 0.2 per cent to 69.3 per cent. The number of employed in the region people rose by 9,000, to reach 2,457,000. We are also getting people off long-term incapacity benefits and into the world of work – in Yorkshire & Humber the number of people classed as ‘economically inactive’ is down 29,000 too. Nigel added: “While unemployment across Yorkshire is still far too high, these statistics have a silver lining. 9,000 more people are in work and the employment rate has risen to 69.3 per cent. There has been a large drop of 29,000 people classed as economically inactive, many are coming off out of work benefits such as incapacity benefit and making themselves available to find work.” Nigel is organising his second Selby District Jobs Fair on October 4th at Selby College Sports Hall. Following the success of his Jobs Fair last September where over 50 employers and 1100 jobseekers attended and the event which was a huge success in getting the local jobless figures down, Nigel commented: “My second Jobs Fair will be bigger and better. Businesses are very keen to meet prospective employees in a relaxed environment and it’s a great opportunity for those looking for their first job or a change of job or an apprenticeship to make direct contact with an employer” Details on the Selby District Jobs Fair 2012 can be found at www.selbyandainsty.com/jobs-fair |
