Statement from Nigel Adams MP:
The Prime Minister has today announced that a General Election will be held on 8th June – and tomorrow (Wednesday) there will be a vote in Parliament to enable the election to take place. An election now will give the country stability and certainty for a full five years, not just up to the point at which we leave the European Union but beyond it too.
The Conservative Government has a small majority and despite the country voting almost a year ago to leave the European Union, it is clear that Labour, the Lib Dems and other parties are seeking to undermine the process for political ends and make the job of negotiating the best deal for the country more difficult.
The current situation risks weakening our Government’s hand in its negotiations with Europe. A strong mandate following an election will strengthen the Prime Minister’s negotiating hand in Europe to enable us to take the right long-term decisions for a more secure future.
The choice for the voters of Selby and Ainsty on June 8th is between strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives – or a weak and unstable coalition government led by Jeremy Corbyn.
