SELBY MP Nigel Adams will officially start the Selby Three Swans Sportive on Sunday, September 6.
The Conservative MP, who represents the Selby and Ainsty constituency, will see off more than 800 cyclists at the popular bike ride, which offers a choice of 30 mile, 66 mile and 106 mile routes through the beautiful Vale of York.
This year the ride is being organised by Yorkshire Cancer Research, which has been the official charity partner since the event was first held in 2013, in partnership with Selby Cycling Club, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Selby District Council.
Mr Adams said: “Selby has always had a strong history of cycling. I remember Selby Cycling Club being very popular even when I was at school in the town. Regular events like the Selby Three Swans Sportive and the Tour de Yorkshire are incredibly important for the community. They prove that we as a district can put on large events that attract people to the area.”
Those who take part in the ride will follow in the tyre tracks of famous cyclists like Sir Bradley Wiggins as they leave from Selby Abbey, starting point of Stage Two of the Tour de Yorkshire. The routes, which will be officially announced on Monday, August 24, will then take participants through scenic villages on quiet, flat roads.
Mr Adams, who is unable to take part in the event due to other community engagements, added: “The Selby Three Swans Sportive has the double benefit of being not only great social cycling event but also raising money for a phenomenal charity. Yorkshire Cancer Research is the foremost cancer charity in the county and it’s heartening to know that every penny is used to improve the lives of people locally.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up. You don’t have to be an expert cyclist, just come along and have some fun. I’m looking forward to starting the race and I would have loved to have taken part myself. Hopefully I’ll have the chance next year.”
