Nigel was delighted to visit Ye Old Sun Inn at Colton, near Tadcaster today to meet chef and owner Ashley McCarthy, who has once again been working his magic with 5kg of Belgian Chocolate, 10kg of Icing and around 1kg of Glucose to producing his yearly creation of chocolate heaven.
This year’s intricately designed model is based on Disney’s ‘Frozen’ that has taken the UK by ‘storm’ (sorry for the pun!). The Ice Castle is nestled in the snowy mountains surrounded by the colourful characters from the film in their own little snow globes. With a special appearance from the family of ‘Trolls’ helping to spell out the title of the piece.
Father of three Ashley has been making these chocolate masterpieces for several years. Each year’s display follows a different theme. More than 40 hours of melting, sticking and shaping went into this year’s creation.
Nigel Adams commented: “What Ashley has created with chocolate is stunning and I know will delight everyone at Martin House. It’s genius.”
The work of chocolate art is currently on display at the pub for customers to enjoy, and they are invited to make a donation to Martin House Hospice in appreciation for much needed funds in running the hospice for young children with life shortening illnesses. Ashley raises money for Martin House throughout the year with various events including a farmers’ market and a Christmas draw, as well as through collecting tins on the bar, thousands of pounds have been raised over the years.
Alison Wragg, community fund raiser (North and East Yorkshire) for Martin House, said: “It’s hard to put into words the joy that Ashley’s chocolate delights bring to our children and young people. This year’s piece will be no exception; it’s truly exquisite!
Ashley and his wife Kelly who have been at the pub for over 10 years are well known in the Yorkshire community as they’re often in the news for winning top national, regional and local awards for the excellent food and service at their pub. The Sun Inn has recently won the ‘Best Wine Pub’ for the Yorkshire, North East & Scotland as well as winning in 2013 the highly coveted ‘Licensee of the Year’ award with the British Institute of Innkeepers.
