Local MP, Nigel Adams, is organising Selby Districts’ first ever Retirement Fair.
Taking place on the 14th March in Tadcaster, the Retirement Fair is aimed at those in, approaching or considering retirement. It is designed to be an informative event with a wide range of stands from local community groups, activities, to the police and the DWP.
Retirement can often lead to boredom and loneliness as people suddenly transition from full time employment to vast amounts of spare time. For some, working out what to do with this time can be daunting.
The aim of the Retirement Fair is to provide those of retirement age with lots of information about activities and events on offer in our local area. Organisations providing information on how to prepare for later life will also be there offering advice.
Speaking about the planned event Nigel Adams, said, “I want to provide an opportunity for people to get involved with our local community and find out about new activities they can get involved in. It is never too late to meet new people and take up a hobby such as walking, travelling, or starting an instrument.
“I would be pleased to see the Fair help give some of the older members of our community a new lease of life and hope that it might go some way to help tackle the issue of loneliness and isolation, particularly in more rural areas.
It is great that organisations such as the Department for Work and Pensions will also be in attendance to help answer questions about pensions and general queries. I would encourage all those who are at retirement age or soon approaching it to come down on the 14th and see what’s on offer.”
The Selby District Retirement Fair is taking place on 14th March from 1pm to 4pm at the Riley Smith Hall, 28 Westgate, Tadcaster, LS24 9AB. Refreshments will be available. For further information, please call 0207 219 7141 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
