Selby’s MP Nigel Adams has spoken of his delight at the news that the “Tour de Yorkshire” cycle race will be coming to Selby. Last month, Nigel and Selby District Council leader Mark Crane announced that they had spoken with race organisers to put the case for Selby District to play a major part in next May’s major international cycle race.

The announcement was made earlier today at the HQ of Welcome to Yorkshire in Leeds. The “Tour de Yorkshire” will be organised by the same team from ASO (Amaury Sports Organisation) and Welcome to Yorkshire, who brought the fantastic Grand Depart of the Tour de France to Yorkshire last year.

The race, which is part of the Europe Tour, will be in three stages taking place over the three days starting on May 1st to 3rd. It is expected that Selby will host the start of one of the stages and the full route will be unveiled on 21st January.

Talks are under way to secure worldwide TV coverage of the race, showcasing once again the beauty of Yorkshire’s landscapes including Selby and the wider Selby District to an international audience.

Nigel Adams MP commented: “I am delighted that our appeal on behalf of Selby to host a stage of this huge sporting event has been successful. The Grand Depart was unforgettable and this new race will put Selby District on the world map.”

“I have spoken with so many residents who hoped that this would come off. The economic and cultural benefits for the district could be enormous and I am keen to see as many parts of the district as possible to get involved with the route.”

Selby District Council leader, Mark Crane added: “The growing enthusiasm and participation in the sport of cycling in the UK is huge and to think that we have managed to get Selby onto the world cycling calendar is quite an achievement. The district council will pull out all the stops to ensure that we take full advantage of this opportunity to showcase the best of our district and welcome the many thousands of visitors that this event will bring.”
