The Environment Agency have now completed their design for the multi-million pound Flood Alleviation Scheme for which funding was allocated in 2019.

You can view the design and discuss it with the Environment Agency at any of the 10 drop-in events to be held at the Ark in Tadcaster:

  • Tuesday 7th March 11am to 5pm
  • Tuesday 14th March 2pm to 8pm
  • Friday 17th March 12pm to 6pm
  • Tuesday 21st March 10am to 5pm
  • Saturday 25th March 10am to 2pm
  • Tuesday 28th March 10am to 8pm
  • Friday 31st March 10am to 4pm
  • Tuesday 4th April 10am to 5pm
  • Tuesday 11th April 10am to 8pm
  • Friday 14th April 10am to 4pm

When responding to my Parliamentary question in February 2023 about the Tadcaster Flood Alleviation Scheme, Rebecca Pow MP, the Flood Minister, said: “The Environment Agency has accelerated work on the Tadcaster Flood Alleviation Scheme following flooding in 2020. This includes completion of small-scale work to existing flood defences and accelerating modelling, feasibility and design, alongside ongoing community engagement. Further formal public engagement will take place in March 2023. This will influence the Outline Business Case which is scheduled for submission in April 2023. The application for planning permission and detailed design will follow and construction is still scheduled to commence in early 2024.”

The small-scale work that the Minister referred to included raising the existing flood defences at the four low points where flood water entered the town in February 2022.

The presentation of the full scheme design at the drop in events is a major step forward and I encourage everybody interested in the scheme to attend. Environment Agency staff will be on hand to explain the design.

You can also view the full details of the proposals online at  https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/yorkshire/tadcaster-flood-alleviation-scheme-proposals. Comments can be made until April 14 2023.

After this consultation, the Environment Agency will determine the final design for the scheme which they plan to submit for planning approval in summer 2023, with construction starting by spring 2024.
