Fly tipping is an all too common problem in Selby and Ainsty and Nigel Adams has welcomed the combination of measures being proposed by Government to combat the problem nationally.
While domestic waste including furniture and rubbish from DIY projects is often dumped by the roadside there has also been industrial scale fly tipping including 20 tonne loads of rubbish tipped around Kirk Smeaton.
To combat the problem created by home improvement waste the Government is consulting on a proposal to stop local authorities charging for waste from DIY projects. Currently North Yorkshire County Council charge homeowners for a range of items including rubble, window glass, sanitary ware and waste plaster board. A consultation has just been started to seek views about whether a charge should be made by councils for the disposal of waste generated by DIY projects. You can find it here https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/household-waste-recycling-centres-diy-waste-disposal-charges-and-booking-systems
In addition to the consultation about charges for DIY waste the Government is also making £450,000 available via Grants to help Local Councils set up innovative projects to combat the problem. This could include use of covert cameras, number plate recognition technology and improved handling of large items such as furniture and mattresses.
Fly-tipping is a crime which blights communities, poses a risk to public health and the environment, and costs up to £392 million a year. Local authorities dealt with 1.13 million fly-tipping incidents in 2020/21, up by 16% from 2019/20. In Selby District piles of tyres dumped by the roadside are an all too common sight.
In Selby District you can easily report fly tipping incidents to Selby District Council via their web site https://www.selby.gov.uk/report-fly-tipping-or-fly-posting. If the rubbish has been dumped on public land the council will usually remove it within a few days. Selby Council are also very active at prosecuting offenders so if you have information about fly tipping incidents please include that when you report the incident.
